Dance school goes digital amid coronavirus pandemic

Royal Expressions School of Dance is now offering online classes for their students.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A local dance academy is switching to digital dance classes to allow their students to continue learning.

Princess Johnson owner of Royal Expressions School of Dance says she and her teachers starting planning to go digital after Gov. Roy Cooper declared a State of Emergency on March 10th.

"We spent six whole days. I mean top to bottom from, 10 a.m. to 10 at night recording video footage of two months worth of dance choreography," Johnson said.

Their planning proved to be necessary now that non-essential businesses can no longer be open.

Johnson says 100% of her students registered for online classes.

"That's just incredible. I'm just like amazed because I was just hoping to salvage as much of our families as we could and try to stay afloat as best as we could," Johnson said.

The students are now able to learn choreography for their upcoming recital from the comfort of their own homes.

"So they know like at the end of this there still something that we are working towards. We are not just [like] here are some online classes good luck guys," Johnson said.

But they've also created extra movement videos and posted those to their facebook page to get everyone up and dancing.

"The community could really use some dance. . . A time to create and think," Johnson said.

Johnson says during this pandemic releases like dance are needed more than ever.

"Just remind people how good it feels to move and express yourself and really let things out," Johnson said.
