GREENSBORO, N.C. – Among those graduating from the University of North Carolina Greensboro on Friday, is Phil Koch. At 82-years-old, he is making history as the oldest graduate from the university.
Koch told UNCG getting his bachelor’s degree was on his bucket list, and decided to go back in 2012. Koch decided to major in history.
He graduated from high school back in 1952. After attending college for a year, Koch couldn’t afford to stay in school, so he dropped out. When he eventually went back, he got his two-year associate’s degree. Afterwards, he enlisted in the army, then got married, had children, and retired in 1994.
Koch says he was inspired after his wife went back to college 15 years ago. Over these last five years – his wife helped him get his degree, critiquing papers and challenging him.
Koch told UNCG he has a greater respect for the generation going through college now – as he saw students take sometimes 18 hours of classes per week, plus hold part time jobs and commute.
