'The Devastation Has Been Discouraging, The Response Encouraging': Tornado Update

"While the devastation has been discouraging, the response has been encouraging," Parrish said.

GREENSBORO, NC - In a news conference Sunday afternoon, Greensboro town and school officials said the damage last week's tornado caused forever changed the city. Officials recapped the recovery effort and looked ahead to the weeks and months to come.

Assistant City Manager David Parrish asked for people's patience as they moved through the neighborhoods helping clean up debris. The cleanup figures to continue for some time.

Parrish said in the first three hours, there were over 1,000 calls to 911. The city says their crews have collected 1,865 tons of vegetative debris and 81 tons of construction debris. Contracted crews have collected 270 tons of vegetation. Other towns like Raleigh and Charlotte are considering bringing staff to help with the recovery.

Over 600 volunteers signed up to provide assistance within the first hours and hundreds more showed up to help over the week according to Parrish.

Parrish also suggested donating tarps to cover up roofs this week with rain in the forecast Monday and Tuesday. Power was back on for everyone by Thursday after nearly 30,000 were without power at one point. Parrish said if you still don't have power, check your meter.

Guilford County Schools Superintendent Dr. Sharon Contreas asked to donate to the Guilford County Schools Tornado Relief Fund at Community Foundation or Greater Greensboro or to the Guilford Education Alliance.
