The Purple House Opens Despite Tornado Damage in Greensboro

The Purple Door House is also taking donations towards assisting tornado victims in the community.

Greensboro, N.C. — The Purple House, celebrated a grand opening, Monday, despite damage from the tornado. It is a resource center for victims of domestic violence. But rather than opening its doors for that, the ribbon cutting marked the beginning of a fundraiser to help them rebuild from the tornado.

The founder said the damage was a significant setback, but it would not deter them from the original vision.

"Through the community, and through the volunteers, we should be able to renew it, rebuild it and restore it," said Portia Shipman.

The Purple Door House is also taking donations towards assisting tornado victims in the community. Those also affected by the tornado can pick up items like canned food from the house.

The Purple Door House is run by a foundation which was set up in honor of 27-year-old Sherri Denese Jackson, a Greensboro woman who disappeared late November 2006. Police found her body in June 2008. Her ex-boyfriend, DeCarlo Bennett, was convicted of her murder.
