ASHEBORO, N.C. – This Veterans’ Day weekend, drivers on highway US 64 in Asheboro will get a view of 700 American flags adorning the South Asheboro Middle School ball field.

Visitors can stop by the Asheboro/Randolph Field of Honor at 523 West Walker Avenue in Asheboro.

This is the second year the Field of Honor is sponsored by the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club of Asheboro, meant to honor local heroes: veterans, first responders, emergency service personnel, and more.

The Chamber of Commerce says that the Field of Honor is for “someone that has made a difference in our life… Any personal hero may be recognized on the Field of Honor.”

The 700 3 feet by 5 feet flags attached to 8 foot-tall poles will be standing in 35 columns with 20 rows.

The Field of Honor is open 24 hours a day beginning Thursday, November 9 once installation is complete, until the afternoon of Sunday, November 12 after a 3 p.m. closing ceremony.

The Field will be staffed between 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. People who have dedicated a flag can be escorted to it by staff. The event is also open to the public to walk among the flags.

Linda Brown, President of the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce, says it is an emotional event.

“We see this event as being a very unifying one for our community. It causes us all to pause and reflect upon the human characteristics we admire most, and allows us to recognize these people in a very special and visible way,” Brown shared.

According to Brown, James Gouty, a leader within the Rotary Club of Asheboro, was the one who pitched the idea to the Chamber.

"It’s a great event. It really gets people behind a common element and that flag is a beautiful flag," Gouty shared during an interview after the installment of flags.

In the past, the staff have seen families have gathered at a flag to remember a lost loved one, veterans kneeling and saying a prayer for fallen comrades.
