KING, NC - After weeks of putting together the pieces that were once Camp Hanes, the YMCA summer camp finally opened to the public on Sunday.

The camp was destroyed after an EF-2 tornado ripped through the area, leaving a lot of the buildings unsafe and unusable.

But thanks to the community and local organizations and businesses, Camp Hanes was able to open for the summer on schedule.

“Within the first 30 hours, I pinched myself several times. As that wore off, the realness came in to play,” said Camp Hanes Director Val Elliott. “We had a vision of making Camp Hanes even better. We made that vision and the community's support is making that happen.”

On Sunday kids checked into the camp and got ready for the fun summer activities to come.
