DANVILLE, Va. - Danville Police say a child was hit by a car while crossing the street to board the school bus Thursday morning.

A release from the Danville PD says the incident happened on Westover Drive, where a 9-year-old girl was walking to a bus that had stopped and made its warning markers visible. A 63-year-old man in an SUV failed to stop for the bus and struck the child while crossing Westover shortly after 7:30.

The child was taken to Danville Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries to her lower body. The driver of the SUV was charged with failing to yield to a stopped school bus.
