RUSH CITY, Minn. - A man with five previous DWI convictions allegedly crashed his vehicle, managed to escape the wreck but left his passenger trapped inside.

According to the Chisago County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened around 5 a.m. Friday, near the 3700 block of Rush Point Drive.

Authorities say the driver went off the road at a high-rate of speed and flipped several times end over end before eventually coming to rest near a home.

The vehicle, which had an ignition interlock device, was found completely totaled. The driver managed to escape the mangled car and flee the scene but his passenger was left inside.

Authorities believe alcohol may be involved in the crash.

When authorities arrived, they treated the passenger at the scene before he was airlifted from the scene to Regions Hospital.

A K9 search was started for the driver, which led authorities to a home nearby. The driver was found inside the empty home and taken into custody. Authorities say alcohol may be a factor in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
