PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WVEC) - Police said they charged a man with Attempted Murder after he tried to hit state Senator Louise Lucas with a car.

Officers arrested 40-year-old James C. Taliaferro on Wednesday.

Investigators said the incident, itself, took place on Tuesday in the 1500 block of High St. around 6:45 p.m.

Lucas said Taliaferro is a former employee of Lucas Lodge which provides housing and services for people with intellectual disabilities and which Lucas runs.

When police arrived at the address on High Street, Lucas told them about Taliaferro's connection to the business and that he tried to run her over. Taliaferro already had left at that point. Medics were there to evaluate Lucas. She declined treatment.

Detective Misty Holley said members of the Portsmouth Police Department Fugitive Apprehension Unit took Taliaferro into custody Tuesday after a brief pursuit that led them into Chesapeake.

In addition to Attempted Murder, Taliaferro faces a charge of Felony Eluding. Police also served him with warrants for Destruction of Property (3 counts) and Trespassing.

Lucas said surveillance footage taken Monday showed Taliaferro backing into the front glass of Lucas Professional Center, the home of Lucas Lodge. She added he turned around and hit the doors again.
