ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. -- A Greensboro man has been charged in connection with a deadly crime spree over the weekend in Rockingham County.
Investigators said Rontae Hayes, 37, is charged in the deaths of two people found at a house in Reidsville. But he also faces multiple charges connected with the crime spree.
Hayes led deputies on a 12-hour manhunt late Saturday night into early Sunday morning that ended with his arrest around 9 a.m.
The crime spree began around 9 p.m. on Saturday, when Deputies said Hayes hit a person with a beer bottle and shot a second person in the leg. Deputies believe Hayes then stole a car that was later found on fire.
Around 1:30 a.m., Deputies got a call about a house fire in the area. Two men were found dead inside of the burning home and a woman was found injured laying outside of the house.
According to the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office Hayes, was originally charged with Attempted First Degree Murder in the shooting death of 49-year-old, Kavin Galloway.
Hayes is now also charged with the following:
- First Degree Murder (2 counts)
- Attempted First Degree Murder
- Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury
- First Degree Sexual Offense
- First Degree Burglary
- First Degree Arson
- Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon
Hayes was also arrested and charged for a murder in May in Eden. On April 26, investigators found 25-year-old Larry "Bud" Alexander Settle, Jr. shot to death on Anderson Street. Hayes was released from jail on June 7. Court documents show he was released because there was "insufficient evidence to warrant prosecution."
Hayes is being held without bond in the Rockingham County Jail.
