GREENSBORO, N.C. - On Thursday, police say the driver of the red Dodge pick-up truck that struck and seriously injured a 14-year-old bicyclist has turned himself in.
Brandon Huff, 21, from Thomasville, got in touch with police on April 4 following media coverage asking for the public to help identify the suspect in the April 3 accident. Huff is now charged with a felony hit and run.
So far in the investigation officials say the boy was riding his bike across the road on W. Florida Street around 5:15 p.m. when he entered the roadway without yielding to oncoming traffic. He was hit by a utility trailer being hauled by the pick-up Huff was driving.
In a release, officials say while officers were tending to the victim, Huff left the scene before being identified. At the time of the accident, the man was not considered relevant to police when they arrived on scene - he just looked like a bystander, according to Public Information Officer Susan Danielsen. She says it wasn't until after he'd left the scene that witnesses identified him as the driver.
Police say the 14-year-old is in stable condition.
The Police Department released Huff on a written promise for him to appear in court.
