The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School Board will discuss school safety at election sites during Tuesday night’s meeting. The topic is listed as the first thing under discussion items.

The Director of the Forsyth County Board of Elections, Tim Tsujii, says schools are generally closed during Presidential elections, but open during other types of elections.

Recent attacks have brought the issue of safety in schools to the forefront and created discussion about who is allowed inside schools and under what circumstances.

Tsujii says North Carolina state law entitles the County Board of Elections to demand use of any public facility for elections – including schools.

The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School Board is only discussing the matter at Tuesday night’s meeting, but Tsujii says state law would supersede any school board change that might try to stop voting at public schools.

Spokesperson for the school district, Brent Campbell, says the security director will give a presentation at Tuesday's meeting which will show the board the current procedure regarding safety on election days and what can be done to enhance it.
