VIRGINIA BEACH-- High winds and a tractor trailer accident closed the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel in both directions Thursday night.

According to bridge-tunnel spokesman, Tom Anderson, the winds are blowing 55-60 miles an hour on the Chesapeaake Bay making the removal of the accident dangerous.

The accident happened around 5:30pm when winds from an approaching cold front blew an empty box trailer over and onto the roadway between the North Channel Bridge and the Chesapeake Tunnel on the Eastern Shore side.

There were no major injuries but the driver was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

Traffic was stopped in both directions so equipment could be brought in to right the trailer, but the winds continued to increase to the point that bridge tunnel officials were concerned they might blow the truck off the bridge if they tried to pick it up.

Officials continue to evaluate weather conditions in hopes of opening the facility to traffic.
