GREENSBORO, N.C. - Almost before Hurricane Matthew left our coast the damage estimates were coming in: homes, infrastructure and businesses.

Core-Logic, a property information provider, estimates insured property losses for both homes and businesses are between $4 to 6 billion from wind and storm surge damage.

In its data the Federal Emergency Management Agency finds 40 percent of all small businesses don't re-open after a flood. And it's estimated a quarter of all businesses hit by disaster go under within a year.

An attorney with the Insurance Recovery Group recommends hiring a public adjuster to calculate damages if you have any doubt about how much you're entitled to. We all know lawyers can be expensive and the attorney says if you hire one, it tends to make the insurance company hire one too. But if your insurance isn't paying what it owes, then you may want to get help from one.
