GREENSBORO, N.C. - Lottery sweepstakes scams are one of the most serious crimes targeting the elderly and vulnerable people nationwide. What happens is your name gets on a list then the phone calls keep coming and coming.
Telephone scammers take money at a faster rate than mail scammers. What you don't realize is you may be talking to them once a month or once a week, but they're calling every 15 minutes. They know how to make a friend.
So here's how you spot a scam: Phone scammers don't want to give you time to think about their pitch. So if you hear a line like 'you've been specially selected' or 'you'll get a free bonus if you buy or product' say no thank you and hang up.
Scammers will also use fake prizes as bait. Here are a few examples of offers you might get -- travel packages, credit and loans, extended car warranties or free trial offers.
If someone calls you with these red flags, just hang up!
