How Do North Carolina Officials Plan To Protect Elections?

After an 11 year old was able to hack into a replica of a state's election website, how will North Carolina officials protect our election results?

An 11 year old made headlines, and some people concerned, after hacking into a replica of the site the state of Florida uses to report election results.

It only took 10 minutes.

It was part of an event held at Def Con, the annual hacking conference. We reached out to the North Carolina State Board of Elections and Ethics Enforcement to see what kind of security measures are being taken.

Here are a few of the things they say they're doing:

  • The board has hired a chief information security officer to oversee all things cybersecurity.
  • It's expanding their post-election audit program, so they can detect anything suspicious in the data that comes back.
  • The board is partnering with the Department of Homeland Security to monitor elections.
  • Modernizing North Carolina's election system, "SEIMS"

The board also plans to switch all of North Carolina's 100 counties to paper ballots. Paper can get lost but it can't get hacked.
