GREENSBORO, N.C -- Having a fire escape plan for your house is essential. First things first, make sure there are working fire alarms in each bedroom and on every floor in the house.

Next, walk through your house and identify all of the escape routes. You need to stop and open the windows to make sure you can get out.

Escape ladders should be near windows on second or third floors. Set it up from a first floor window first to make sure you can do it properly. You can find them on Amazon for $30.

Lastly, make sure everyone knows where to meet once you're outside.

Now that you've done all of that - practice! The National Fire Protection Association recommends twice a year. Make the drill as realistic as possible.
