Snow Canceled The WFMY News 2 Holiday Blood Drive But The Need Is Still there

The WFMY News 2 Holiday Blood Drive has been canceled for Tuesday. We'll let you know about any updates if it is rescheduled.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WFMY)-- The WFMY News 2 Holiday Blood Drive was canceled for Tuesday, December 11.

The winter storm hit our area very hard. Many parts of Greensboro and surrounding counties saw record snowfall. The wintry mix that followed didn't help the situation and roads, especially side roads remain treacherous.

The Red Cross was expecting 407 units of blood that day. Usually, they try and get 500 units of blood in a day. But there were ZERO given at canceled Holiday Blood Drive. So......

Now that the roads are becoming safer, you can make an appointment to donate blood, find out more HERE.

The need is there. And while 1/3 of the public never questions that there will be enough blood for them or their family member if needed, the loss of a blood drive like this makes it tough.

Thanks for your support and please check back for an update, if the blood drive is rescheduled.

“The need for blood does not get a snow day,” said Maya Franklin, external communications manager, Carolinas Blood Services Region. “It is the blood products already on the shelves that help save lives when severe weather hits.”

During times of inclement weather, road conditions and power outages often result in the cancellation of blood drives and a shortfall of blood and platelet donations. Nearly 1,700 blood donations have already gone uncollected as a result of blood drive cancellations in the Carolinas, and more blood drives are expected to cancel in the coming days. On average, the Red Cross must collect more than 13,000 pints of blood every day for patients at approximately 2,600 hospitals across the country.

Thanks for your support and please check back for an update, if the blood drive is rescheduled.
