2 Women Killed ID'd, 3 Kids Injured After Van and Car Collide In Winston-Salem

The collision happened Tuesday morning in the 700 block of Clemmonsville Road. Police say Clemmonsville Road between I-40 and Old Lexington Road will be shut down for several hours.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-- Police in Winston-Salem are investigating an accident that left two people dead and three children injured, one of them critically after a van and car collided.

The collision happened around 8:17 a.m. Tuesday morning in the 700 block of Clemmonsville Road. Police say Clemmonsville Road between I-40 and Old Lexington Road was shut down for several hours.

Reports say the accident was between a van with one adult and six children onboard and a car with two adults and two children.

The driver of a Lincoln Mark VIII, Latonya Carter, and one passenger in the car, 38-year-old Shameka Carter, were pronounced dead at the scene.

We spoke with their nephew, Latrell McIntyre who says they were more than just his aunts.

"Like the phone call, it hurt me the most because, those two -- they are two-thirds of the people who raised me. Living in a house with about 10-12 kids, those three -- my mom and them two. It was kind of like losing my mom -- twice," said McIntyre.

Latonya Carter was driving west when the car lost traction and went into the eastbound lane, crashing into a Dodge Ram van driven by Kristy Horstkamp of Winston-Salem. Two children in the Mark and one in the Ram were taken to Brenner Children's Hospital.

McIntyre says their family was so close, and that's why this hits so hard.

"My aunt 'Meka, when she died, she was just the spirit -- the heart of the family. She showed what we stood for, our family is strong -- her leaving -- it took the strength out the family. My other aunt leaving it kind of took the backbone from the family from right under us, because it's like, what do we do from here? How do we go on," asked McIntyre.

Police confirm the van was going to an 'educational facility' but wouldn't release any other details, because children are involved and they want to make sure all parents have been notified.
