7-Year-Old Possibly Drowned in Pond in Martinsville, VA: Sheriff

Deputies found the child floating in the center of the pond. One of the deputies swam out and brought the child back to shore and began trying to save the child's life.

MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- A 7-year-old died after possibly drowning at a pond in Martinsville on Friday, according to the Henry County Sheriff's Office.

Martinsville/Henry County 911 received a call around 5 p.m. about a child in a pond off of Davis Road.

Deputies say when they arrived they found a child floating in the center of the pond. A Henry County Sheriff's Deputy swam out and brought the child back to shore. The deputy and other first responders on scene began to try to save the child's life.

The child was transported to SOVAH Health Martinsville, but was later pronounced dead.

The sheriff's office says the cause of death is unknown at this time and an autopsy is scheduled for Saturday, June 2nd.
