WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- Wednesday marks seven years to the day since the Winston-Salem Police Department lost one of its brothers in the line of duty.
Sgt. Mickey Hutchens was shot and killed on October 12, 2009 while on patrol for WSPD.
Hutchens died after serving his community more than 20 years.
Lots of people left flowers outside the Fallen Officers' Memorial at the WSPD station.
Members of the Honor Guard stood tall outside the memorial Wednesday.
Police Chief Barry Rountree says Hutchens was a great officer but an even greater person.
"He was a dedicated family man and also dedicated to the law-enforcement profession," said Rountree. "We take pride in it because they've made the ultimate sacrifice in serving their community and representing the Winston Salem Police Department."
There have been 18 Winston-Salem officers killed in the line of duty.
Each year, on the anniversary of their deaths, the department pays respect to them with the honor guard at the fallen officers' memorial.
