UPDATE: Tuesday morning, Greensboro police said Richard Roof was charged with six counts of Felony Assault with a Deadly Weapon on Law Enforcement and one count of Discharging a Firearm in the City Limits.
The 57-year-old was taken to Guilford County Jail and given a $1 million bond with his first appearance scheduled for today and his court date set for Oct. 16.
Around 11 a.m. Monday, the Greensboro Police Department, Guilford County Sheriff’s Office, and High Point Police Department were able to peacefully end the barricaded situation.
Police say Roof surrendered to officers ending the nearly 18 hour ordeal.
Roof will be transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Greensboro Police are negotiating with a person barricaded inside a house on Huffine Mill Road. As a result, the area has been blocked off and Guilford County Schools closed Bessemer Elementary School and Gateway Education Center to all students and employees.
This situation started just before 5:15 Sunday night when Guilford Metro 911 received a call about a possible shooting in the 1000 block of Huffine Mill Road.
When the first officer arrived on scene, they heard gunfire coming from a house. People from the residence asked for help and officers moved them to a safe location.
At last check, police said no one appears to have been injured by the reported gunfire.
The GPD Special Response Team and Hostage Negotiation Team are on scene negotiating with the suspect, who is reportedly armed.
Traffic in the area is being diverted and drivers are asked to avoid the area.
