Body Language Tips To Deal With Holiday Party Misbehavior

Ways to handle the person who gossips, flirts or touches you at the office holiday party.

We are in the thick of it now. Just a week and a half until Christmas. There's a good chance you'll be going to a Christmas party at some point. There's also a chance you'll find yourself in an uncomfortable situation.

Here are some tips to handle the most common tricky situations. If someone gets a bit too touchy then you can move your shoulder, arm, hand, whatever body part that they're touching. You can use drink in your hand as a physical barrier between you and the person. If they don't pick up your body language cues then tell that you'd like some space.

Let's say that someone wants to gossip about co-workers and you're not interested in hearing it. You can excuse yourself and talk to someone else. Or, you can tell them that you don't want to talk about it and change the subject.

For the flirter who says something inappropriate, you can tactfully call out their behavior. You can ask them to repeat what they said. That's usually enough where they'll say "noting" and not repeat it. If they repeat their flirtatious comment then you can say something like, "not appropriate", "not funny" or "not interested".
