LEXINGTON, N.C. — The city of Lexington officially filed a lawsuit to remove the Confederate statue.
Lexington's mayor said the monument is a public safety hazard, after months of protests and a dozen arrests. However, Davidson County officials said it's against the law to remove or relocate the monument.
City leaders said the court action is the only way to determine the monument's fate.
