Driver Still Missing After Tractor-Trailer Pulled From Neuse River in Eastern NC

Authorities say the rig crashed through a bridge rail barrier along the westbound lanes U.S. 70 around 4 a.m. Sunday.

KINSTON, NC (AP/WNCN) - Workers have pulled a tractor-trailer out of a river in North Carolina a day after it skidded off a road, but searchers have yet to find the driver.

WITN in Greenville reports the N.C. Highway Patrol said the rig was pulled out of the Neuse River near Kinston on Monday. The trailer appeared to be one belonging to the U.S. Post Office.

Authorities say the rig crashed through a bridge rail barrier along the westbound lanes U.S. 70 around 4 a.m. Sunday.

Dive teams reached the truck's cab on Sunday but no driver was found. A search with about 50 people took place Sunday, but was stopped around 5 p.m.

State wildlife officers were to go out on the river Monday, while boats equipped with sonar are also expected to help with the search.

Transportation officials said the truck damaged about 30 feet of the bridge's railing.

U.S. 70 was closed to traffic for 24 hours, but has since reopened. However, the left westbound lane will stay closed as crews repair the bridge.
