LAS VEGAS, NV -- A Triad man says he was outside of the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas when he heard gun shots go off Sunday night.

"It was really bad," Mitch Neal, of Eden, tells WFMY News 2 over the phone.

He later learned shots were fired from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort. Police say shooter Stephen Paddock took his own life after shooting into a crowd of thousands listening to the Jason Aldean concert at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival. There are more than 50 reported deaths and more than 500 reported injuries.

"I ducked and covered," Neal explains, saying an officer instead told him to run. "So, I ran with everyone else and tried to get down the street."

Neal says he was staying at a nearby Wyndham timeshare. He was able to make it back there Sunday and let his family in Rockingham county know he was safe.

"It's just shocking," he says. "I see it on TV and sometimes I brush it off, but now I'm looking at it."

Neal says he has family coming to meet him in Las Vegas Wednesday.
