3.21 Dash for Down Syndrome

All proceeds benefit the Down Syndrome Network of Greater Greensboro which supports individuals with Down Syndrome and their families.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Ready, set, dash to the finish line and this run is for a good cause. The Down Syndrome Network of Greater Greensboro is hosting its second annual 5K walk and run Saturday, March 24 in downtown Greensboro.

The traditional family-friendly 5K has a little something extra. Runners and walkers have a unique 3 point 21 mile finish in recognition of the third copy of the 21st chromosome present in individuals with Down Syndrome. The medical term for it is Trisomy 21.

Runners will still run the traditional 5K (3.11 mile) run, but they'll also have a short extra dash for a total distance of 3.21 miles. Medals will be offered to the first 400 5K finishers.

Nick Martin told WFMY News 2's Tracey McCain why he likes to participate.

"I enjoy making friends, beating the drum, hanging with my mom and passing out the medals," he said.

All proceeds benefit the Down Syndrome Network of Greater Greensboro which supports individuals with Down Syndrome and their families.

"We are committed to enriching their lives by connecting families in the community with educational and social activities," said race organizer Korey Hickling.

The event also raises awareness, something 30-year-old John Vanderwerff says is a process.

"We can do anything that anyone else can. We can have a job, complete high school and do other things. There's a lot of things that people don't know about Down Syndrome. We can do anything that we set our minds to," said Vanderwerff.

It's not too late to sign up for the 3.21 Dash for Down Syndrome. The 5K is Saturday, March 24, 2018 at Greensboro's LeBauer Park from 8:30a.m. to 11:30a.m. For more information, click here.
