Dealing with Trauma After a Major Storm

How tornados and other natural disasters can cause trauma symptoms and PTSD.

Local Psychotherapists,Dr. Nannette Funderburk joins the Good Morning Show to discuss coping with emotions and the potential for PTSD after a traumatic natural disaster.

PTSD occurs when there has been a life threatening situation and people witness or hear about it. It typically starts out as acute stress, and once is stays there long enough, four weeks or so, it's named PTSD.

Signs to look for include: irritability, anger, anxiety, and nervousness about re-experiencing the traumatic event.

Concerning kids, it's best to lead by example. Show them it's okay to have strong emotions post storm and that it's okay to talk about them.

Dr. Funderburk reminds us that trauma faces adults and children, so never be ashamed to get professional help.
