Have A Plan, Know These Tips To Stay Safe On The Water

You hear it all the time, "be safe on the water," but you hear it because it's important. Already this year ten people have died in North Carolina because of boating accidents.

GREENSBORO, NC -- You hear it all the time, "be safe on the water," but you hear it because it's important. Already this year ten people have died in North Carolina because of boating accidents. Six of those people were not wearing life jackets.

What should be a fun day on the water can become dangerous. The best plan to keep you and your family safe is to be prepared and know these safety tips.

Brandon Schroll of Boats Unlimited in Greensboro spoke to WFMY News 2's Maddie Gardner about boating and water safety. Schroll says boat owners should complete a checklist before they even get to the water. He recommends checking the trailer and tires you'll pull the boat on and looking at your boat's engine before heading out.

You also want to know the laws and conditions of the water. Check the forecast for bad weather or storms before diving in. Use your eyes, if the water looks rough or there are too many people don't go out. Check out North Carolina's laws on ncwildlife.org. Schroll says to ask officials if you have questions.

Finally, double check your equipment and supplies. Everyone on the boat needs a life jack. We repeat, everyone on the boat needs a life jacket. Kids under 13 must have the life jacket on whenever the boat is moving. Your boat also needs a fire extinguisher and a throw cushion to help someone in the water.

Here's a list of safety gear that isn't required by law but is recommended:

  • Flashlight
  • Anchor
  • Whistle
  • Air horn
  • Safety ski mirror

Schroll also recommends leaving a boating plan and contact information with someone onshore. Tell them what time you'll be back and let them know to call for help if they don't hear from you within a reasonable time.
