JAMESTOWN, N.C. -- Swim season is right around the corner for folks in the Triad. But before you load up on sunscreen and head out to the pool, swim instructors have some safety tips for you and your family.
That's why the Ragsdale YMCA in Jamestown is offering affordable swim lessons and water safety classes.
The program, "Safety Around Water," will be held May 23 - 26. The cost for all four lessons is $5.
“This particular program reaches out to the community to support all children, including those who may not have the financial ability to participate in swim lessons year round,” Justine Intiso, aquatics director at Ragsdale YMCA, said in a news release. “Participants learn about boat safety, water park safety, beach safety and backyard pool safety and will also be introduced to beginning swimming skills.”
According to the CDC, three children die from drowning each day in the United States.
Initiso said drowning is a preventable death, yet the Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that drowning is the second leading cause of deaths for kids age 5-14 and 88% of children who drown, do so under adult supervision.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has some tips of its own to help your family stay safe around the water.
- Supervise kids when in or around water
- Adults and kids should use the buddy system
- Learn to swim
- Learn CPR
- Avoid alcohol
- Know how to prevent recreational water illnesses
- Know the local weather conditions and forecast before swimming or boating
