Greensboro City Approves New Parking Decks, Sale Of Land For Development Project

On Tuesday evening, City Council members discussed two big items related to downtown development.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - On Tuesday evening, City Council members discussed downtown development, and the two big items: paying for new parking decks, and approving a brand new, multi-million dollar development of row homes and apartments.

Leaders voted to approve city funds to pay for the two parking decks, set for the corner of February One and Davie Street, and the corner of Eugene and Bellemeade. Critics have argued in the past whether the city needs more parking space, but leaders say most city-owned decks are at capacity - and building more decks was a necessary move.

As for the new development, it would be built on the south side of downtown, at the corner of West Gate City Boulevard and South Elm Street. The project totals more than $27 million, constructed of row houses and apartments, as well as retail space.

"There isn't a big row house element here. You have some in Southside and that’s new," said Milt Rhodes, with the development group Greenline Holdings, "And you think about places like Richmond, which is just all row houses. Why don’t we have that tradition here? Well a lot of it got torn down, as we built the city. And so now we have an opportunity to build it back."

While you might see a mostly-empty, gravel lot now, the developer says starting this winter, and over the next three years, you'll see 60 plus townhomes for sale - and almost 40 apartments for rent -- popping up.
