Homeless Man Helps People Impacted By Tornado In NE Greensboro

"My situation is that I'm homeless," he said. "But they were in more need than I was at the time. I just get joy out of helping others."

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- With a pair of gloves and his own two hands, James Cole is doing what he can to help people impacted by Sunday's tornado.

"Helping people get their lives put back together. Getting the debris out of their yard and off the top of the roofs," Cole said.

After all, not having a place to call home is something Cole knows all two well.

"My situation is that I'm homeless," he said. "But they were in more need than I was at the time. I just get joy out of helping others."

And he's not alone. The City of Greensboro call center is ringing off the hook with people wanting to lend a hand.

"It's very heartwarming to see the outpouring of willingness to help from the community. It's unlike anything I've ever seen," said Customer Service representative Nathan Butler.

He said the center has seen triple the call volume of what they see on a normal day.

The calls are coming from volunteers like Wenalyn Glenn who went door-to-door delivering hot meals to neighbors.

"Earlier today I had my kids out here because we want to make sure that our kids understand the reason why we're out of school and how you need to give back," Glenn explained.

These gestures bring a little hope to neighbors trying to piece their homes back together

"They really showed their heart and that meant a lot. That's going to go a long way," said Darryl Smith, a neighbor who is dealing with storm damage to his house.

Anyone who wants to volunteer can call the city of Greensboro's hotline at 336-373-2489.
