STATESVILLE, NC - Iredell County's Fellowship Baptist Church generated controversy after it displayed a message on its front sign this past week that some considered inappropriate.

For several days, the church, which is located along Buffalo Shoals Road, posted the following to its sign: "Remember, Satan was the first to demand equal rights".

The sign was recently changed, but Wendy Macasieb said it remained firmly on her mind.

She is the mother to seven children of mixed race, and she believed the sign was racist.

"I had come home and my mother was here, and I actually was in tears when I got home," Macasieb said.

Susan Deihl has lived across the street from the church for 10 years.

She supports the messages posted by the church with the exception of this latest one.

"I think that was a little harsh," Deihl said.

The church posted a statement on its official Facebook page Tuesday evening:

The church sign that was in the news was NOT meant to offend ANY people, group or compare ANYONE TO satan. That is not what we teach and preach!

It was speaking about our adversary the devil who did want to be God. We pray that the LORD would bless any who were offended!
