RAMSEUR, N.C. -- Police in Ramseur say a 72-year-old man was robbed this weekend after he was asked to help push a car.

Ramseur Police Chief Larry Lewallen says the 72-year-old man was out walking on Jordan Road around 5:30 Saturday morning when a man stopped him and asked him to help push the car. There was also a woman in the car trying to steer the wheel. The pair wound up robbing the man of his cell phone and wallet.

Police say the 72-year-old man sustained minor injuries. When the pair tried to escape, he actually pulled out his gun and fired some shots at their car.

Jeremy Hayes is being held at the Randolph County Jail.

Ramseur Police say they're investigating and believe the person involved in the crime is 28-year-old Jeremy Hayes of Asheboro. They arrested him Monday on an outstanding warrant for a similar incident in Randolph County.
