ABERDEEN, N.C. (WNCN) - A man who taught for 41 years in schools in North and South Carolina plans to buy a newer car to replace his 20-year-old sedan that has more than 300,000 miles on the odometer.
Harry Veasey, a retired schoolteacher from Aberdeen, won $1 million in the "Hit $5,000" game on Wednesday.
Veasey picked up the lump sum on Thursday at the N.C. Education Lottery headquarters in Raleigh.
“It was all right,” Veasey said of the win.
Now, Veasey said he plans to replace his 1997 Toyota Camry with a 2017 Camry. He also plans to pay off bills and save the rest of his winnings.
Veasey bought his winning lottery ticket at Jay’s Food Mart on N.C. 211 East.
Veasey even used the store's ticket checker to double-check his winnings. The device read: “Claim at lottery.”
Veasey is the first person to win one of the five $1 million top prizes in the "Hit $5,000" game.
After winning, Veasey chose the lump sum, which after state and federal tax withholdings, came to $423,009.
