North Carolina coach Roy Williams fired back at University of Maryland president Wallace Loh on Wednesday during an interview with SirusXM College Sports Nation.
In an audio recording obtained by The (Raleigh, N.C.) News & Observer, Loh called the University of North Carolina’s academic scandal — which has been the subject of a lengthy NCAA investigation — “abysmal” and added that “implementation of the death penalty” could be a fitting punishment.
Williams, fresh off leading the Tar Heels to national title earlier this month, addressed UNC's NCAA investigation several times during the Final Four and expressed his frustration on the black eye it's put on the program.

Of Loh's comments specifically, Williams said: “We have a President that says we should get the death penalty. A president of another university. I mean to me that’s just so silly. A guy told me one time, ‘You can get a little knowledge and it turns you into an idiot, but no knowledge you’re a double idiot.’ And that’s about the way I look at that thing.”
Those comments echo North Carolina's vice chancellor of communications Joel Curran, who told the News & Observer: "Clearly, Dr. Loh misunderstands the facts of the case, and how NCAA bylaws apply to those facts."
