GREENSBORO, N.C. — Lightning kills! The National Weather Service (NWS) reports lightning kills an average of 55-60 people, in the U.S. every year and severely injures hundreds of others.
We have seen our fair share of lightning strikes this storm season right here in the Piedmont Triad. It never ceases to amaze. On Tuesday, a lightning strike blew all the bark off a tree. Kristen Massey who lives in Madison said it happened in the Ferris Park neighborhood.
She said it sounded like a bomb went off when it hit and it also knocked down half of the tree. A photo reveals the bare tree with a perfect line of bark left in the yard.
In May, Meteorologist Christian Morgan tweeted out a photo after lightning hit a Pin Oak tree at his house in Asheboro. You can see a burn line straight down the tree and even into the ground from the lightning.
