HIGH POINT, N.C. -- You can help name High Point's new baseball team.

The High Point team is officially part of the Atlantic League which is made up of eight teams, according to Coy Willard, Chairman of the Board of High Point Baseball.

High Point Baseball, Inc. bought the Atlantic League's Bridgeport Bluefish team out of Connecticut back in September, and in January, the Atlantic League approved to move the team to High Point.

But the team's name will change, and that's where baseball fans come in.

Willard says there will be an opportunity for fans to name the team and mascot. More information on the name-the-team contest will be announced at a groundbreaking event on April 11 at 11 a.m.

Other interesting info about the new High Point Baseball team:

  • Unlike the Winston-Salem Dash or the Greensboro Grasshoppers, the new High Point team is not owned by Major League Baseball, and contracts are handled through Atlantic League.
  • High Point Baseball Inc., which is a non-profit board, owns the team. Willard says this means that the revenue brought in by the games will get put back into the city of High Point and charitable causes.
  • Players will be hired closer to when the first season begins in May 2019.
