We always heard that the eyes are the windows to your soul. But, what does this mean when it comes to body language. And why should we care?

Reading facial expressions gives you a glimpse of the someone’s internal state at that moment, which has huge implications in your interactions. Some people may try to hide what they’re feeling because they don’t want you to know what they're feeling. Or, they’re trying to dupe you. And when you can accurately read someone then you can better understand people.

Your eyelids can reveal subtle emotions. When you’re starting to feel an emotion or you want to hide an emotion then you might not show the full expression of the emotion. But, you’ll show glimpses of that emotion on your face.

Let’s start with sadness. Up on the screen, you see the photo of a woman covering her mouth with her hand. If you look at her eyes, you’ll notice that her upper eyelid is drooping or closing just a little bit. You can have the the drooping without any other facial movement.

It's common to confuse fear and surprise. On the touch screen, you’ll see a photo of a young girl and a woman. Let me show you how their eyelids are different. With the little girl – her eyes are open wide, upper eye lid pulled up. But, look at the woman – her upper eyelid is pulled up enough where you see the sclera – the white part of top. That’s the difference. It’s important that you realize I’m talking about the subtle expressions. There’s more to it when you consider forehead, eyebrow and lower face, but that’s for another segment.
