NEW YORK A 6-week-old baby is dead after her stroller fell down an elevator shaft in Brooklyn, reports CBS New York.

It happened around 10:40 a.m. Thursday at an apartment building on Neptune Avenue in the Sea Gate area of Brooklyn, N.Y.r.

The child’s 21-year-old mother said she unintentionally pushed the baby, who was in her stroller, into an empty elevator shaft on the 23rd floor.

The stroller plunged eight floors, landing on top of the stalled elevator car.

When officers arrived, police said they found little Areej Ali unconscious and unresponsive.

The baby was pronounced dead at Coney Island Hospital. The medical examiner will determine cause of death.

The elevator was out of service. It is unclear if maintenance workers were on the site at the time.

The investigation is ongoing.
