WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest earned the No. 1 overall seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, the selection committee announced on Monday afternoon.
The Demon Deacons (17-1-2) receive a first-round bye, and will play the winner of Wednesday's game between William & Mary (11-4-5) and Columbia (11-2-3).
Wake Forest will open tournament play on Sunday at 5 p.m. at Spry Stadium. As the top overall seed, Wake Forest has the opportunity to host through the NCAA Quarterfinals before the College Cup in Philadelphia.
The Tribe, which will host the opening round game, enter as the automatic qualifiers from the Colonial after outscoring Hofstra, James Madison and UNCW by a 9-3 margin in the CAA Tournament.
The Lions received an at-large bid into the tournament. Columbia finished second in the Ivy League, which doesn't have a tournament, and is on a five-game shutout streak since a 2-1 loss to conference champs Dartmouth on Oct. 21.
Also on Wake Forest's side of the bracket is No. 16 seed VCU, which will host the winner of Butler and Lipscomb.
Potential quarterfinal meetings could include No. 8 seed Clemson (vs. winner of Coastal Carolina/Mercer) and No. 9 seed Stanford (vs. winner of Pacific/Cal State-Fullerton).
