Police identify victim in deadly Highway 52 crash in Winston-Salem

Police said Catalina Mariano-Cruz, 59, from Winston-Salem died as a result of the crash.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Officers with the Winston-Salem Police Department investigated a deadly traffic crash on US Highway 52 Southbound at US Highway 421.

Police said two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision, but are still investigating the cause of the accident.

WSPD officials said Catalina Mariano-Cruz, 59, from Winston-Salem died as a result of the crash. She was a passenger of the car that flipped on the highway during the collision, police said. She was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of Mariano-Cruz's video, 62-year-old Pedro Banos Avila, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the second vehicle, 20-year-old James Edward Cuthrell, was not injured.

This is an ongoing investigation. More details will be provided as they become available.

This is the 3rd traffic fatality of 2021 compared to zero at this same time last year.

U.S. Highway 52 has reopened.
