OAK ISLAND, NC -- It's eerily quiet along the North Carolina coast ahead of Hurricane Matthew.
Thursday, the Mayor of Oak Island issued a mandatory evacuation for all visitors to the island. However, that doesn't include the media.
WFMY News 2 crews and one other station are the only ones staying at a hotel on Oak Island.
The hotel manager told them they had this week and weekend completely booked but they've had to check out people early.
On the drive into the coast, the WFMY News 2 crews saw plenty of houses with boarded up windows. Many people are not taking the warnings lightly.
Some people are still putting up boards ahead of Hurricane Matthew.
A lot of people headed inland too. WFMY News 2 crews saw at least a dozen huge boats being towed away from shore.
