Inmates Start Fires, Cause Distrubance at Goldsboro Prison

GOLDSBORO, N.C. -- A corrections staff member and an inmate were injured during a disturbance at Neuse Correctional Institution Sunday afternoon.

According to the Department of Public Safety, the disturbance was started by a small group of inmates around 4:30 p.m. Authorities say the inmates started two fires that have been put out.

The Prison Emergency Response Team (PERT), Goldsboro Police Department, Wayne County Sheriff's Office, Johnston County Sheriff's Office, State Highway Patrol, probation officers and other local law enforcement responded to the incident. 

The facility is under lockdown until further notice and PERT is staying onsite to maintain safety and security at the prison.

It's unclear why and how the inmates were able to start the fires. Authorities have not released how the corrections staffer was injured.
