80-Year-Old Woman Competes At Track And Field Championships

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Flo Meiler is an 80-year-old, great grandmother who's still competing competitively.

Meiler likes to give it her all and push it to the limits while competing in pole vaults, shot puts, and long jumps. This week she is competing at the USA National Masters Track and Field Championships at Wake Forest University.

Meiler competed in six events Thursday, including the hammer throw. She threw it about 74 feet, which broke a U.S. record.

For most people, it might be a monumental accomplishment, but for her it's just another day.

"I love challenges," Meiler said. "Like doing the steeple chase, that is the biggest challenge I have ever done."

Meiler was recruited at the age of 60 at a tennis match. She told WFMY News 2, some people saw her playing tennis and were impressed with her skills. She said they wanted her on their track team and she loves every second of it.
