Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Matt Lauer and Charlie Rose. That's just a few of many big names that are being accused of sexual harassment in the workplace. Many of these have lost their jobs almost immediately.
You might be wondering how an accusation leads to an automatic firing. I believe there’s a lot that happens behind the scenes that you’re not aware of. Companies are stating that they’ve done internal investigations even though the details of their investigations aren’t being released. You’re seeing the end result, which are the firings. But, you’re not privy to what lead up to the decision.
You also might be wondering what message is being conveyed through the firings. I hope the message is if you sexually harass someone then there are dire consequences that will uproot your life. Loss of job, career and financial stability as well as the social repercussions on your family.
Some people wonder if all the alleged victims are telling the truth. The likelihood of an alleged victim lying is small, but nonetheless anyone can lie about any reported crime. Someone can say that an electrical problem caused a house fire when the cause was burning candles.
If someone lies about being sexually harassed then it can be a set back in the fight to stop sexual harassment. We have a culture where women aren't believed about sexually harassed and they're blamed for encouraging sexual harassment. The current intense fight will become more intense.
