Dead Dogs Found in Bags Along Roads in Eastern NC: Humane Society

"Seeing that I called and nothing was done, infuriated me — that's their job"
Four dead dogs have been found in garbage bags on the side of roads in Wilson County.

WILSON, N.C. (WNCN) — A fifth dog has been found dead in a trash bag along a Wilson County road Wednesday afternoon.

The discovery comes on the heels of four others found since Friday, officials said.

The Wilson County Humane Society says they believe the instances are connected.

The Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, Wilson police and animal control all responded to Marie Street Wednesday afternoon.

Kim Edmondson said she found the dog. She’s the President of the Wilson County Humane Society.

“Unbelievable. I think I’m really numb to it,” Edmundson said.

She said she was driving back from lunch with a coworker. More aware of her surroundings following the four other dead dogs found, she spotted the black garbage bag and stopped.

“You could tell from the bag by the shape of the bag that something was contained in it that wasn’t leaves. You could tell it wasn’t soft. We got out, we pulled the bag apart. It was two bags, one over the top of the dogs head, one over the back of the dogs head,” Edmundson said. Then she called police.

On Friday, three dogs were found along a rural road outside Elm City. On Monday, another was found off Baldree Road in Wilson.

The woman who found the fourth dog called animal control. Deputies said the dog was too badly decomposed to investigate and asked the city sanitation department to take care of the remains. On Tuesday, Edmundson, the humane society president, found the remains still sitting along the road.

She took them to a vet, who determined it was a male pit bull mix. It was about 8 or 9 years old and died from blunt force trauma. It had been dead for about 72 hours when it was found.

“We need some leads and I’m worried that there are lots of other dogs out there,” Edmundson said.

“There’s just no way that there are three or four of us finding these dogs because we care. It just makes me wonder: If the police, the sheriff’s department took this really serious, how many they would find on roadsides,” Jenkins said.

The Wilson County Sheriff’s Office said the case has been turned over to an animal cruelty investigator. Deputies called the circumstances “suspicious in nature.”
