Greensboro Church Finds Temporary Worship Venue

At the now empty Refuge Church on Bessemer Avenue, construction workers were already trying to repair some of the damage.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Sunday marked one week since an EF-2 tornado roared through the City of Greensboro and Rockingham County. A number of churches sustained significant damage to their structures.

At the now empty Refuge Church on Bessemer Avenue, construction workers were already trying to repair some of the damage. The church lost the entire roof of the admin building. The windows were also boarded up and the perimeter of the church was fenced in.

Parishioners who would usually fill the lot and sanctuary had to find an alternative location for Sunday worship. The nearby the Purpose Church on Balboa Street offered them a roof to worship under.

"So many people are just trying to do their best to help but there still people there we can go out in service," said Pastor Derrick Hawkins of The Refuge Church Greensboro.

Hawkins said being able to have a place to worship after their ordeal is just one of many kind gestures that have revealed the spirit of the community.

"I just want to encourage people and implore people that over the next few weeks, they should continue to go out and support and do whatever they can to lend a helping hand." Pastor Hawkins said it will take a little while before they can return to worship at their church building.
