NC College Student 1 of 3 Injured in SC Shooting: Police

Howard Boone Jr., 23, from Raleigh, who is a student at Saint Augustine's University was wounded during the shooting, college officials said in a news release.

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) - A Raleigh college student was critically injured in a shooting early Sunday in Columbia, South Carolina, officials say.

The incident happened just before 2 a.m. near Harden and Greene streets, Columbia police said.

Howard Boone Jr., 23, from Raleigh, who is a student at Saint Augustine’s University was wounded during the shooting, college officials said in a news release.

Boone is a criminal justice major and was described as a "high achieving student," according to the university.

“The University continues to pray for Mr. Boone and his family, Saint Augustine’s University president, Dr. Everett B. Ward said in a statement. “Mr. Boone is a model student and well respected among his peers.”

Boone is a member of the ROTC and received his airborne certification last year, the news release said.

According to university officials, Boone has "aspirations of being commissioned as a second lieutenant into the United States Army upon graduation."

Two other men were also wounded in the shooting, according to police.

Police said they are looking for persons of interest in connection with the shooting in the Five Points section of Columbia.

Officers say the men are believed to have information related to the shooting.
