South Graham Elementary Uses Dancing As Global Approach For Learning

South Graham Elementary held their annual SPLASH Showcase, a big production where dual immersion students and teachers can incorporate global learning and dancing to their fellow classmates.

GRAHAM, N.C. – South Graham Elementary held their annual SPLASH Showcase, a big production where dual immersion students and teachers can incorporate global learning and dancing to their fellow classmates.

SPLASH is the name of the Spanish immersion program offered at the school where students at every grade level learn the school’s curriculum in both English and Spanish simultaneously.

Students and teachers performed traditional and modern dances from Spanish-speaking countries, ranging from Colombian Salsa Choke to Mambo, Cha-cha-cha, and Rock en Español.

Amy Burgess, a third grade English SPLASH teacher, has been teaching in the program for six years. She says the program is not beneficial only to the students but the staff as well.

“Our population doesn’t really see a lot beyond probably Graham and Alamance County,” Burgess said. “For them to understand globally, how things work in other places and to actually have somebody from those places has been really positive for all of us.”

It’s been a busy week for teachers and students, as this is the second showcase of the week. On Tuesday, September 19, students performed to parents and community members, and again on this opportunity for the rest of the school.

South Graham Elementary is one of 7 global immersion schools in Alamance-Burlington School System that offers dual language immersion and a focus on a different continent in each grade level.
